Who doesn’t love to travel? Seeing exotic locations and trying new foods is one of the most satisfying ways to spend a vacation, and can create memories that will last your lifetime. However, with the price of fuel increasing, that also has driven up the price of flights. Also, with less people traveling, some airlines have cut back on flights, which has further drive up the price on the remaining flights, how exactly can you travel on the cheap these days? Here are our top tips for seeing the world as cheaply as possible.
- Plan Ahead, Or Don’t Plan At All: We get it, this is pretty contradictory, but flights are generally cheapest when they first get listed (usually about 6 to 9 months out) or just before the flight as airlines scramble to fill empty seats. So either plan way ahead to find a cheap flight, or check for the cheapest flight you can find from your local airport about week out and just have fun with wherever you find!
- Look For Subsidized Flights: Some countries and cities will have ‘subsidized’ flights to try and stimulate tourism. These flights are significantly cheaper than comparable flights, but can be somewhat limited in availability. If you find one to Europe, keep in mind there are a lot of super cheap regional airlines you can bounce around to different countries on once you’re over the sea!
- Don’t Be Afraid Of Lesser-Traveled Locations: Some of the most fun we’ve had traveling was visiting lesser-known locations that don’t attract the large tourist groups. These areas generally have much cheaper lodging, as well as cheaper flights and food once you’re there! Sure there may not be the huge ancient monuments of Rome, but you may be surprised what you find!
- Skimp On Lodging: You’re traveling for a reason, and it’s probably not to hang out in your hotel room. Be sure to check out smaller hotels, or even vacation rentals. You won’t be here much except to sleep and recharge, so don’t blow your budget on a luxury hotel.
- Do What The Locals Do: Most locals wherever you visit probably don’t spend big bucks every day. And lets face it, locals probably know where has the best food for a good value, and its probably not the most expensive restaurant in town. Don’t be afraid to ask your taxi driver or hotel front desk person where they usually go out to eat and check it out yourself!
